Google and Yelp are safe bets, but what else is out there?

  3. MapQuest

  6. Yellow Pages
  7. Superpages

Primary Local Business Directories

All businesses should add their information to the following directories:

  • Better Business Bureau (BBB) – A long-running review platform that mediates disputes between consumers and businesses.
  • Bing – Similar to Google. It’s owned by Microsoft.
  • Yellow Pages – The digital version of the long-running paper-based business directory. This version has a map and online reviews.

Other Important Platforms for Businesses

  • Facebook
  • Trustpilot
  • Apple Business
  • LinkedIn
  • Indeed

Facebook is, by far, the next most important platform for businesses outside of Google and Yelp. It’s simply not a traditional directory in the same way the latter platforms are.

Trustpilot is important as well, though it’s more of a review platform than a place to discover businesses.

Apple Business gives you a way to control your listing on Apple Maps, and LinkedIn and Indeed are great for allowing job seekers and consumers alike to see what your business is like as an employer.

Finally, there’s Foursquare.

Most articles on this topic include Foursquare on their lists, and pretty high up, too. However, while the company still exists, they’ve shut down their directory and have redefined themselves as a location intelligence platform.

1. Google

Business profile on Google

Traffic (Worldwide): 84.94 billion visits/month | Traffic Share (United States): 18.90%

Google is the world’s leading search engine and a popular source for discovering local businesses.

If a consumer enters a local keyword into Google, they’ll see business listings instead of information websites.

Businesses appear as pins on Google Maps while business details appear in the Places section of the search engine results page (SERP).

Each business has a profile (listing) on Google, which consumers can view to learn more about a business, specifically its name, phone number, address, website and what customers have to say about it.

Make sure you claim or create a profile on Google so you can control what will probably become your most important business listing.

2. Yelp

Business profile on Yelp

Traffic (Worldwide): 143.8 million visits/month | Traffic Share (US): 91.24%

Yelp is a popular review platform, but because its database is so large, it also acts as a business directory.

Consumers start their search by entering a keyword into the platform’s search bar and choosing a location.

Business profiles have reviews, business details and even a map for directions.

Claim or create a business listing on Yelp no matter what type of business you own.

3. Tripadvisor

Business profile on Tripadvisor

Traffic (Worldwide): 95.38 million visits/month | Traffic Share (US): 60.65%

Tripadvisor is similar to Yelp in that it’s primarily a review platform, except this one is designed specifically for businesses tourists are most likely to visit.

You start your search by entering the city or region you’ll be traveling to. The platform lists popular hotels, restaurants and attractions in the area.

Profiles have prominent photos, reviews, business details and booking availability.

It’s a fantastic platform to create a listing for if your business is a tourist destination.

4. MapQuest

Business profile on MapQuest

Traffic (Worldwide): 23.24 million visits/month | Traffic Share (US): 84.49%

MapQuest is a navigational platform consumers can use to get directions to almost anywhere.

The service’s database has grown well enough over the years to assign business profiles to individual addresses consumers travel to.

These profiles aren’t as detailed as they are on other platforms, but because MapQuest receives tens of millions of visits a month, it’s still a worthwhile platform to create a listing for.

5. Better Business Bureau (BBB)

Business profile on Better Business Bureau (BBB)

Traffic (Worldwide): 10.39 million visits/month | Traffic Share (US): 88.33%

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is an organization that mediates disputes between consumers and businesses. It has been around for more than 100 hundred years.

As a digital platform, it has compiled all of the feedback it has received for businesses and repurposed it into a business directory consumers can use to find trustworthy businesses in their area.

As such, it’s a good idea to list your business on the platform and apply for accreditation. Also, respond to any complaints you receive through this channel.

6. Bing

Traffic (Worldwide): 3.57 billion visits/month | Traffic Share (US): 39.15%

Bing is the biggest competitor to Google. It’s a search engine owned by Microsoft, and it offers many of the same features, including local search, which is integrated with Bing Maps.

Searching for local keywords leads to results for local businesses, each of which have their own profile on the platform.

The only major difference is Bing doesn’t have its own review functionality. Reviews are imported from third-party platforms instead, primarily Yelp.

Use Bing Places for Business to create and/or manage your listing on the platform.

7. Yellow Pages

Business profile on Yellow Pages

Traffic (Worldwide): 4.22 million visits/month | Traffic Share (US): 93.91%

Yellow Pages is one of the oldest business directories in the world.

For decades, the company printed large phone books with literal yellow pages that contained an alphabetic list of local businesses.

They even have a map view.

Traffic (Worldwide): 503,000 visits/month | Traffic Share (US): 95.37%

It has a map view as well.

WebMD is a media company that specializes in healthcare. They primarily publish articles on their website and offer digital healthcare tools and apps, such as the Symptom Checker app they offer on mobile.

Also on the company’s website is a directory patients can use to find doctors in their area.

It has profiles for individual doctors and entire clinics. Profiles have ratings, business details, map views and forms for requesting appointments.

Obviously, you should only add your business to this directory if it’s in the medical field.

Lawyer profile on Justia

Traffic (Worldwide): 9.20 million visits/month | Traffic Share (US): 79.74%

Justia is a directory for lawyers. You can search for lawyers by entering a legal issue and selecting a city.

The site also has a collection of articles that allow you to learn the law as well as a portal you can use to ask lawyers questions for free.

Also Consider: Legal Information Institute

Legal Information Institute is a legal resource operated by Cornell Law School. Along with educational resources to help you learn the law, it has a directory for finding lawyers anywhere in the United States.

This website receives 3.32 million visits/month.

11. Thumbtack

Business profile on Thumbtack

Traffic (Worldwide): 9.37 million visits/month | Traffic Share (US): 96.43%
